Sustainable Living Week

The Rotary Club of Orange has a keen interest in helping the community be more sustainable and efficient in its energy and water use and its minimisation of waste. It therefore organises a week of activities in September each year focused on education about sustainability. Rotary partners with the Orange City Council, Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange (ECCO) and Netwaste to raise awareness about simple ways of saving energy and water and reducing waste.

In 2017, Sustainable Living Week began with the Orange Farmers' Market at the Orange Showground on Saturday 9 September. The attraction at the Market was a Primary Schools' sustainable cooking challenge. School teams were given a box of ingredients and asked to prepare a main meal for judging, based on innovation, taste, and efficient use of the food. This event always draws a good crowd.

On the afternoon of Saturday 9 September the public was invited to a free information session on solar energy and battery storage. About 50 people attended to hear Rob Bivianno of Central West Solar talk about the lastest developments in solar panels and battery storage.

The main event for the week, 18 to 20 September, was a series of science workshops for school students and their teachers with an emphasis on weather, climate and science technique. This event is run by the CSIRO Science Education team and taylored to suit the agegroups.

On-site information sessions at Banksia Building and Kensington Homes covered energy saving tips and the opportunity for people interested in building or renovating to talk directly to the builders.
